US West and TCI Conflict in Tacoma?

Someone said US West claims that if a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL), is installed in a house where a digital cable system is also installed there will be a conflict between the two systems. This is somewhat puzzling, since, in Tacoma, the use of the phone line with the digital cable system is very seldom and is intermittent such as to make adjustments to the programming sequence or when pay-per-view movie channels are turned on or off. In some "outlying areas" the telephone system frequencies are still used for the uplink (SEND) commands or data transmission. This is  the operating mode of the so-called Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). Perhaps both systems are using the same or overlapping frequencies bands--or maybe this is simply a marketing ploy to get you to cancel the "other", competing system.

US West has two prices for their DSL Service:

$19.95 per month - Two hour limit on any one connection.
$29.95 per month - "On" all the time.

Add to this your Internet Service Provider charge of about $20 to $30 per month, for a cost of $40 to $60 per month depending on the provider and the services provided.

TCI Cable modem service in Tacoma is between  $45 and $46 per month (taxes included) and very fast

      Q. I am going to install a new hard drive. My present hard drive is partitioned in to C, D and E. Are   there any pitfalls that I should be aware of?

      A. When you install the new drive and tell your   computer that it is there, the operating system will   arbitrarily assign letter D to the new "Hardware" and   bump your partitions on the C drive to E and F. That   is C remains C, partition D becomes partition E,   partition E becomes partition F and D is the new  drive.

If you have shortcuts in Windows or use any batch (.BAT) files to automate the launching of executable programs or processing of data, the drive references need to be reviewed and changed to reflect disk letter changes. This will not necessarily be done automatically and may have to be changed manually.

      Q. When I download something does the Anti Virus program scan it immediately?

A. No, not unless during installation you selected the option to check all downloads. If you did that, after scanning it will ask you where you want to store it.

 Further Comment:
I also learned a lot about how to use PKUNZIP on the downloaded file. It was a very instructive exercise.

Librarian: I would recommend that you get a copy of WinZip 7.0 It is much easier to use. We have it in the library.

     Q. Does Windows 98 require that my printer have a two-way cable? It used to work fine with Windows 95 but won't work with Windows 98.

     A. Windows 98 is short of printer drivers.
Microsoft was depending on the printer people to come up with a universal printer driver (see the article in the July 99 TOGGLE) so left most of them out of Windows 98 releases. They are now scrambling to add them. Try calling Microsoft's website but also call your printer manufacturer's website to see if they have a Win 98 compatible driver.

     Q. How can I stop all the unsolicited mail I get on ICQ?

     A. ICQ can be set to ignore mail from certain callers. Look at the options menu.
