Problem Switching ISP's
The following is the account given to Dave Rowe
by Thomas T. Caparrella

Last Friday we changed from Harbornet.com to Comcast.net (as our Internet provider). I had set up a hotmail account in the past. Well, when I tried to access the hotmail account but received a Security Certificate error. I had, as well, set up a Windows Live account and wasn't able to access it as well. I then tried to build one in Yahoo but also received a Security Certificate error as well. I then called Comcast it see if they had any idea as to the problem. They had no idea but recommended I call Windows (Microsoft?). They gave me the phone number.

I then called them (Microsoft). After talking to Customer Service she gave me to Tech Support. They were in India. The gentleman didn't do too bad speaking English. He asked me if I saw the time in the lower right corner. I then double clicked it and found the time okay but the date was at 2212 or some such date. When I changed the date to 2009 everything started working. I was then able to access my hotmail account. He told me that Windows checks the date with whatever application you are accessing and if the date in Windows isn't the same as the application you receive a Security Certificate error and can't access the application.

The other problem I encountered came when I noticed that my old email address appeared in the reply to the emails I had sent out. I had no idea how this could have been. I called Comcast Tech Support and they had me go into the account section under the Tools menu. I changed the email address in the General account.

Next they had me go to the Servers tab and change the incoming and outgoing mail addresses. Next they sent me to the Advanced Tab. Here is where they had me change the outgoing mail port. The guy told me to change it to 537 instead of the 25. I did all this and all of a sudden I wasn't able to send or receive any email. They had me go in the Comcast web site to change my password. I ended up leaving them and tried some other things but with no success.

I then called them up again. I got this woman and she had me do all the things this other Tech had me do. I spent close to an hour with her and she was saying that I may have to use the Comcast web site for my email. I told her that this wasn't a possibility. I gave up on her.

Several minutes later I called up and got another tech and he had me change the outgoing mail port to 25 and all of a sudden I started to receive tons of email including the several emails I had sent to myself. He told me that the 537 port was a special port and that 25 was what I was supposed to use. The other port on the Advanced tab was still 110 and that doesn't change. With all this I will not be changing the upper port to anything other than 25.

Dave I am sorry that this email has been soo long. Thank you for everything you are doing for us.
