TOG President Carl Tenning and Newsletter Editor Bob Thomson will present a program on Ubuntu Linux at the January meeting. This is one of the many so-called "Live" CD versions of Linux which allows you to run and evaluate Linux on your machine without actually installing it. To use the Live CD your PC must be configured to boot from the CD and the Linux operating system will be loaded on boot-up. Depending on machine configuration vis-a-vis memory and CPU speed our experience has been that this may take a few minutes to a half hour due to repeated buffer overruns on one machine. It eventually loaded on the recalcitrant machine and

operated normally, including surfing the web. When finished with your evaluation or other use of the system, remove the CD and reboot your machine normally. Nothing will have been changed.
Two machines will be used. One will boot from the CD, the other has Ubuntu Linux installed on a spare hard drive and will be fully functional. Both machines can go on the Internet, but the CD operated machine while it has access to the Sun Microsystems Office suite can save only files limited in size to a floppy disk. The installed Linux has access to all devices.
