| System Boot Problem With Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.0 | |
|
by Carl Tenning, Tacoma Open Group for Microcomputers, Feb. 2002 | |
|
I began getting an error
message at boot-up, that Rtvscn95 has performed an illegal operation and
would be shut down. Searching for this application on the Internet
(using Google), I found that the problem is associated with Norton Anti
Virus Corporate Edition 7.x. On a Symantec Knowledge Base page, found by
searching for "Rtvscn95", I learned that the fault is not with
Rtvscn95, but is a timing problem with Defwatch or possibly some other
application loading during startup.
Symantec has an update at www.symantec.com/ techsupp/ files/ symevnt/ symevnt.html for Sevinst.exe that may solve the problem. I downloaded and installed this update and no longer get the Rtvscn95 fault on bootup. |
TOGGLE Editor's Note:
At the Februrary 2002 meeting, Norton Antivirus (NAV) version 7.60 was discussed. We acquired a copy, and after uninstalling the previous version 7.0 and then installing version 7.6 from scratch, our version of Norton Antivirus is now listed as version 7.60.0.926. We have not had the problem discussed above, even with version 7.0. Tom Stepanek says he had this problem and when he called Symantec he was told that it may occur when a previous version of Norton Antivirus is not completely uninstalled before installing the newer version. He went through the uninstall/reinstall sequence and solved the problem. That is: Do not just delete the program--do a full uninstall, then reinstall the newer version. |
