What's a ?

The question has arisen frequently among those attending the sessions at the Resource Center regarding how to find out about those error messages that appear when you get the dreaded "This Program has performed an illegal action and will be shut down." You may be offered a "Details" button, or a specific error code. The question becomes, "What does that mean?"

Microsoft offers an online source which includes much of this information. It's their Knowledge Base. The Know ledge Base is a collection of reports of solutions by the Technical Support staff at Redmond. The Knowledge Base articles cover almost any imaginable problem with Microsoft products. You should defmitely check here before getting on the phone to Redmond.

One may go directly to the Microsoft website and then search for the error code of the statement. However, this can be a frustrating experience. There is a simpler way!!
In April, 1999 our Webmaster, Curtis Potsic, wrote about an excellent search engine, Google.com. Some of you may have missed it, or have since forgotten about it. I bring it up again in the current discussion because of one very special feature it offers.

If you want to search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for a specific subject, error code, or whatever, log onto www.google.com. Add the letters KB at the end of your search query , and it will lead you directly to a list of the appropriate articles in the Knowledge Base. Check for the one nearest your specific clue and click on the link. With luck you'll fmd your answer.

TOGGLE Editor's Note:
We have touted google as our search engine of choice for a couple of years now. It has many features of this type, but we usually just go with plain vanilla searches at which it is excellent. The KB search was a feature we did not know about and are glad to learn. We'll have to try it soon and hope you will too.
