If Your Disk Defragmenter Won't Work
Submitted by Carl Tenning, Tacoma Open Group
If the Windows 98 Disk Defragmentor keeps giving the message "Drive contents changed: restarting. Reading drive information, and 0% Complete", (or starting over -ed), first make sure that any antivirus or task scheduler is disabled (and don't forget the screen saver -ed). Then go to Start, Run, and type in "msconfig" (without the quotes) and click OK. This will bring up the System Configuration Utility window. Under the General tab, check mark "Selective Startup". Then uncheck the following items:
    Process Config.sys file
    Process Autoexec.bat file
    Load Startup group items
Then click "Apply" and "OK". You will need to restart the computer. Disk Defragmenter should now finish to completion. (Mine did! Defragging my 10 GB drive took an hour and 40 minutes.- ed)

When finished, re-run msconfig and select "Normal startup".

Thanks to Chuck West, Boeing Employees Computing Society for this tip which he obtained from the Microsoft $35 per incident help line at 1-800-936-5700.
