While doing research on a presentation about computer firewalls, and in particluar about the NEC firewall "tunneling software" called SOCKS, I came across this gem of a website at http://www.jagat.com/joel/socks/html (see blurb in right-hand column =>). My discovery was quite accidental and I take no credit for it, but wanted to let you know about it, especially those of you who have more time on your hands than you know what to do with. Further research into this subject is left as an exercise for the reader.
