Restoring Windows Registry
by Louis de Cocq, Bellevue, WA
as told to Carl Tenning
If Windows has a lock up problem after a new hardware installation, one solution may be to restore the Windows Registry from the most recent backup. I have found that (in many cases) restoring a version of the Windows Registry Files that were valid prior to the freezeup will enable one to get back in business without having to reinstall Windows.

To do this, one must reboot the machine and get into DOS mode (holding SHIFT F5 during the reboot cycle).
(Another way of entering MS-DOS mode is to hold the Ctrl key when starting Windows 98. For Windows 95 hold the F8 key. Then select Command prompt only from the menu. - Carl)

From the C:\ prompt, Change directories to Windows\Command. (C:\ CD Windows\Command) and then type Scanreg / Restore.

Select a previous registry date from the drop down menu, OK and reboot.

Doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot!
