Windows XP provides no direct support for the Patterns feature that was present
in earlier versions of Windows, but the feature is still there. It's just hidden
in the registry.
To enable a pattern, first set "None" as the background in Display Properties. Then open the registry editor by Start > Run > and type in "regedit" (without the quotes). Next you need to find the code for the patterns. To look up a code, go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Patterns For example, the desktop pattern for thatches is "Thatches=248 116 34 71 143 23 34 113". However, you won't edit anything here. A variety of patterns are listed and each one has a Data Value. Copy just the Data Value you want to the clipboard. Then go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop Add a string value called "Pattern" by clicking on the "Edit" tab and selecting "New". Then select "String Value" and enter the new name as "Pattern". Next, with "Pattern" highlighted, select the "Edit" tab again and click on "Modify". Then paste the string from the clipboard in as its value. Exit REGEDIT and the new pattern will appear the next time you log on. |
